Most Orange County homeowners never think about the electrical panel until something forces the issue. Usually it is an EV charger quote, a heat pump quote, or an ADU plan check comment. Then they find out the panel in the garage, installed when the house was built in 1972, is the constraint on everything they wanted to do. Here is how to see it coming.
What a Service Upgrade Actually Is
Your electrical service is the total amperage the utility delivers to your house. Older Orange County homes commonly have 100 amp service, and some have less. Homes built or renovated more recently typically have 200 amps.
A service upgrade replaces the main panel and usually the meter enclosure and service entrance conductors, raising your capacity. It is not the same as adding a subpanel, which distributes existing capacity rather than adding any. If your problem is total capacity, a subpanel does not solve it.
Signs Your Panel Is Already the Problem
- You are out of physical spaces. No open slots for new breakers. Tandem breakers may be filling slots already.
- Breakers trip when normal things run together. Not one bad appliance, but a pattern.
- Lights dim when large loads start. The AC kicks on and the room flickers.
- You still have a fuse box. Rare now, but it exists in unrenovated older homes.
- The panel is a brand with a known safety history. Certain older panel brands from the 1950s through 1980s have documented failure to trip issues. If yours is one of them, that is a safety replacement, not an upgrade.
- Anything warm, discolored, buzzing, or smelling hot. That is not a planning item, that is a call an electrician today item.
The Modern Loads That Are Forcing This
What changed is not that houses got bigger. It is that the loads people want to add are large and continuous:
- A Level 2 EV charger, and increasingly two of them in a two car household

- A heat pump water heater replacing a gas unit
- An induction range replacing a gas cooktop
- An ADU, which brings its own substantial load
- Solar with battery storage, which has its own interconnection requirements
Any one of these might fit. The combination usually does not, on 100 amp service.
You May Not Need the Upgrade
Before you commit to a service upgrade, ask an electrician about the alternatives, because there are real ones and a good electrician will raise them unprompted:
- A proper load calculation. Actual measured or calculated demand is frequently lower than people assume. Sometimes the answer is that you already have room.
- Load management devices. Systems that prevent two large loads from running simultaneously, letting an EV charger coexist with existing service. These are increasingly recognized as a legitimate alternative.
- A lower amperage charger. A 32 amp charger still adds plenty of range overnight for typical commuting, and demands far less than a 48 amp unit.
- A meter socket adapter. In some configurations this allows an EV circuit without touching the panel.
An electrician who quotes a service upgrade without doing a load calculation has not established that you need one.
What the Project Involves
A service upgrade is a permitted job with a utility coordination step, and that second part is what drives the timeline. Broadly:
- Load calculation and design
- Permit application with your city
- Utility coordination for the service disconnect and reconnect
- Installation day, with power off for several hours
- City inspection
- Utility reconnect and meter reset
The scheduling dependency on the utility is the part homeowners underestimate. The electrical work itself is often a day. Getting the utility appointment aligned with the inspection can take considerably longer, and it varies across Orange County jurisdictions and service territories.

Two things move the number more than anything else: whether the panel stays where it is, and whether your service is overhead or underground. Relocating a panel from an awkward interior location to an exterior wall is a significant add.
Time It With Other Work
The best moment for a service upgrade is during a project that already has walls open, permits pulled, and an inspector coming. If you are planning a whole home remodel, an addition, or an ADU, fold it in. Doing it standalone later means paying separately for permits, mobilization, and drywall repair.
Incentives for electrification related upgrades exist in California and change by funding cycle, so verify what is currently open for your address and utility rather than budgeting from a number you read. And confirm permit requirements with your city's building department, since they vary across Orange County.
